comfort

One of the most important things in your job is your comfort1.

You need challenge to grow, but comfort allows that challenge to be positive and reinforcing.

Figure out what about your job makes you comfortable. For me, it's the team directly around me. Usually outside of that can frustrate me, so I need the close comfort to counter-balance.

If the balance skews too negative then yeah, you probably need to increase your comfort or find something new.

I found something new, and the first ~8 months so far have been tricky. I had a really closely knit team where we all worked together constantly, and now I have a team of great people who have a great laugh but work quite separately.

It's made me have to find new comforts, and I'm still searching, as well as rebuild relationships.

It's been hard, and I've considered quitting but I know that this challenge will make me grow and then I'll be comfortable. Challenges help grow your comforts, too.

So, sometimes, it's worth leaving and sometimes it's worth staying - unless you can see an inevitable downfall coming.

  1. I like to think of comfort as Psychological safety, Engaged brain, Lack of boredom, A team you can trust, A leader you can trust
